Often referred as hair restoration, it is a surgical procedure which transplants hair follicles from the back of the scalp to the hair loss affected area. Most people shed around 50 to 100 hairs a day. As people age, our hair tends to become thin. Hormonal factors, medications and medical conditions are also one of the known causes of hair loss.

Description

During a hair restoration, physician moves hair from a thick growth area to the bald areas. Mostly, hair restoration is performed in an office setting under the local anesthesia and patient only experiences minimal pain. After cleaning of the scalp, surgeon will make use of needles to numb an area where there is normal growth on the back of the scalp. Some part of the hairy scalp is then detached with a scalpel and is set aside. Scalp is then sewn closed. Small set of hairs or individual hairs are separated from the scalp with the help of a magnifying class and sharp blade. The part which will receive these healthy hairs is cleaned and numbed with small needles. Lastly, tiny holes are done in the front portion of the scalp. Healthy hairs are then directly placed in the holes. During a single session, hundreds or even thousands of hairs can be transplanted.

Why hair restoration is performed?

Hair restoration can considerably enhance the appearance and self-confidence in patients who are getting bald or experiencing hair loss. Nevertheless, it is vital to remember that this process do not create new hair. It can only move the hair you already have from the back to the front portion of your scalp. Most patients who undergone a hair restoration have male or female pattern baldness. Patients must still have thick hair on the back or sides of the scalp to have enough hair follicles to move. In cases, where patients who have lupus, injuries, or other medical problems can also be treated with a hair restoration.

Complications

Complications from any surgical procedure include:
  • Infection
  • Bleeding

Other complications that can happen with this method:
  • Unnatural-looking tufts of new hair growth (more common with older techniques)li>
  • Scarring
